Things I Remember

Along in June about the 20th, John D. arrived at the Hague's and so the family grew again. [John D. is your editor's father]
Some time along the way when Russie wasn't very big "Teddy" a little rat terrier became part of the family. Jesse came over one morning with a little puppy in his pocket for Russie. We had him for 10 or 12 years. While he was still with us we adopted another puppy we got from the Fields who lived down in the old house by Allie's. He didn't stay little very long and grew to be quite a good sized fellow. He had the saddest looking eyes, When he finally died he just disappeared and we never found him. When Teddy died Russie buried him in the orchards. At the church we had a cross in the front of the sanctuary with the words "It Is Finished". We came home one day from someplace after Russie had buried Teddy and found a cross he had made to mark the grave and on it "It Is Finished".
Spud had a craving for chickens and after killing one or two Russie's daddy told him we would just have to get rid of Spud. Russie begged for a little more time, took Spud into the woodshed and later told has dad he would be alright for he had prayed with him and wouldn't touch any more chickens. That was a wonderful lesson in faith as Spud never did kill another chicken and finally died of old age. Somewhere along the line we had a collie named Susie and another named Laddie. Laddie was a favorite of mine. Russie brought him home about the time the road was being black topped and kept him at the barn until it was a good sized pup.
