"We buy and sell, generally focusing on mid-century art and design from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, mostly from the 1950s and 1960s. We started in 2018 and we buy furniture, lighting and small items. My husband is the one who does most the buying at auctions. We sometimes buy estates, but that is few and far between, but we mostly buy items at auctions. Before the pandemic, we bought items in Indiana. He travels around the Midwest to cities like Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and Louisville and all over," she explained.
They made a strategic geographic move to a prime address known for antiques, arts and eclectic items. "Before the pandemic, we were set to rent a place in the 54th street area. It was so uncertain when the middle of the summer happened, we wanted to have a physical location and this place happened to be open. It's closer to where we live," she mentioned. Their art and design gallery is complimented by Solomon Paris Restoration and Corner Bazaar with their retail mix of merchandise.

Sheafer + King Modern does sell on websites like Chairish, Everything But the House, Etsy and Ebay, but they prefer "getting to know their customers and establish relationships based on their proving great service, open communications, trust and shared responsibilities."

She reflected on the fulfilling aspects of being an entrepreneur. "The most rewarding about we do - for me personally - is that what I like is discovering new artists. Sometimes, we buy an entire artist's estate. I research them and I find it fascinating reading about artists that are interesting and new."
Ms. Sheafer earned her bachelor's degree in art history at the Savannah College of Art and Design and her master's at the University of London. Prior to starting this business she worked as an auction cataloger, and she is obsessed with making sure everything on our site is described as thoroughly and accurately as possible. "I started out as a film major, but took an art history class and wanted to do this the rest of my life and switched majors. I love art - it's fun to talk about, research and sell it. My husband started out as a musician. He fell into this career. My background is in visual art," she noted.
Prior to co-founding Sheafer & King Fine Art and Design, Andy was an Associate Professor and Music Director of the Orchestras at Purdue University. Whether through music, art or design he is fascinated by the way people choose to express themselves. He still works as a freelance musician and orchestra conductor, but he has discovered that he loves the competitive nature of art auctions, researching artists and craftsmen.
