Kyle's Revisions
On a fall night in 2000 Kyle Andrews and I sat and enjoyed Karenoke at a club on the strip in Broad Ripple. As we sat we wrote poetry as we normally do when in the seated position. As we sat and wrote I saw Karen Irwin (The Queen Of All Karaoke) display an act of kindness to a drunk and aggressive soul who had stumbled into the club.
I then wrote a poem that seemed to me an offshoot from Karen's benevolence. I felt good about my effort, but told Kyle to make any necessary changes and give it a title. (I trust Kyle's poetic gifts far more than my own.) He changed the word 'students' to 'souls'. This served to give the poem better meter and a more transcendental quality. The title he chose was also more perfect than I could have fathomed.
You will find the finished poem below:
A Healer's Lament
When there are no
more fences left
to mend
When there are no
more apologies left
to send
When there are no
more goals left
to reach
&
When there are no
more souls left
to teach
then
You are finished.
You can go home now.
