Sharing Millie's Vibe.
Mom did a great job of encouraging thoughtfulness in her three children. "Isn't that thoughtful?" I heard this countless times in Mom's bright southern voice. I am sure my sister and brother would say the same.
Mom loved to entertain. We had so many guests, so often, that it was mesmerizing to me. I think that that type of hosting would drive me nuts (or more nuts). My college roommates would make fun of me because Mom was always putting food in front of them-even if she didn't make it. Oreos and other cookies were right in your grill if she hadn't baked something. Mom wanted guests to relax and settle in. I think Mom found snacks an easy way to achieve this end.
Mom loved to laugh and to laugh with extreme intensity. She thoroughly enjoyed a long, funny joke or story. She was known to laugh so hysterically that she would be in tears and scream, "Please stop!" "Please stop!" "I'm about to pee my pants!!!" When the other party relented, she would compose herself enough to hear more of the story. Shortly thereafter, Mom would be laughing outrageously.
I think of Mom often when I have company over. When they are playing the guitar or doing art I think of Mom as I refill their coffee mugs or dispense small chocolate bars. I see it as a way of maintaining the vibe.
Mom left this plane of existence over 25 years ago. But my sister Jen and my brother Jim also carry the vibe of Millie Turner Pruitt. The good feeling of a good gathering appears to be a transgenerational experience.
