The Wine Scene: Sips for Survival - by Jill A. Ditmire

Sips for Survival
The William Hill Winery was one of many Napa Valley wineries in the path of the deadly Santa Rosa fires of 2017. Its vineyards, production facilities and tasting rooms all suffered damage and closed for several months. The winery is back in production and its delicious, food friendly wines are available again on store shelves. I was going through my dusty dog hair laden wine cellar and found a bottle of its Chardonnay. It's a classic example of that California style of juicy tropical fruit with a hint of sweet vanilla oak. Seeing the bottle reminded me once again of the resilience of Mother Nature and the human race. I thought it might make a welcome gift for a Chardonnay loving friend of mine who's been hunkered down in her home for the past month. I wore gloves, wiped down the bottle with disinfectant, left it on her patio then texted to let her know delivery was complete. I stood far away and waved and smiled (even though she couldn't see as I was wearing a mask) while she stepped out the door, picked up the bottle and returned to the house. It's not the same as sitting and sharing with her but it did remind me that we CAN still practice safe physical distancing and be social.
If you can't make your own deliveries, DRIZLY can. The on line wine/liquor/beer store works with local retailers to deliver product for a price. www.drizly.com
