Poetic Thoughts - my people have suffered - by C.W. Pruitt II

It is astonishing that we are here. It is astonishing that we were even born at all.
We as individuals do not have to go back far to find stories of survival in our direct lineage.
My father survived two life-threatening surgeries in his first year of life. An ancestor took a bullet in the shoulder during the Civil War. It remained there as he tilled the soil in Freetown, Indiana for the remainder of his days.
We have all suffered in our lives and our ancestors have withstood impossible odds to get us here.
Here is a thought:
my people have suffered.
i have suffered.
but here i am
right now
with both feet
planted firmly
on the ground.
i just need to decide
which direction
in which to walk.
