Buzzing Around Town

Merry Everything and Happy New Year dear readers. I hope you all have been relaxing and soaking in the joy of the season. And I hope that your stockings and holiday boxes were stuffed with albums and concert tickets. Cheers!

The Blue Side
Friday, December 27, 2019
The Jazz Kitchen
5377 N. College Ave. (Red Line: 52nd St. stop)
21+, two shows - 7 & 9:30, $20
I'm not sure that The Jazz Kitchen stage has enough room for all of this talent! The Indianapolis Jazz Foundation presents The Blue Side, one of the highlight performances of Indy Jazz Fest. The group is curated by saxophonist Rob Dixon, and the band features internationally acclaimed vocalists Gordon Bonham (also on guitar), and Tad Robinson (also on harmonica) as they front a best-of-the-best band featuring Kevin Anker on Hammond B3, Kenny Phelps on drums and Reggie Bishop on keys. How lucky are we to have these amazing musicians living in our city?
The Jazz Kitchen is one of my favorite places to have a delicious meal, relax, and let the music wash over you.

Leisure Kings
Sunday, December 29, 2019
Melody Inn
3826 N. Pennsylvania St. (Red Line stop: 38th and Park)
21+, doors 7/show 8 pm, $5
How fun will this be? The delightful Leisure Kings will be at the Melody Inn for a cozy two-set evening of performing their lounge version of classic songs. Expect the talented musicians - Sean Baker and Mike Wiltrout - to put a fabulous twist on classic and not-so classic songs, sprinkled with humor and fun. What a great way to round out 2019.

Rebecca Rafla House Concert
Saturday, January 11, 2020

The Casa Bublik house concert series is celebrating their one-year anniversary. Their first show of 2020 features vocalist Rebecca Rafla. Rebecca is known for her command of the Great American Songbook and the world of Bossa Nova. Think Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Tony Bennett. Rebecca's diverse repertoire is influenced primarily by gypsy jazz, swing, musical theatre, and her favorite musical styling, bossa nova.
You will be sent the address of the show when you RSVP (casabublik@yahoo.com) for this outstanding performance. Donations will be taken at the door. You are encouraged to bring a dish/appetizer/finger food to share.
The format of the evening:
6:30: Social hour/mingling/libations/food/meeting old and new music-loving friends
7:30: Music begins promptly
8:30: Break for talking & visiting; more libations/food/mingling
9:00: Second set

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
