Inaugural Global Fest to benefit CFI School 70 - by Mario Morone
by Mario Morone
posted: Aug. 31, 2018

The inaugural Global Fest is Saturday, September 15th, 2018, from noon to 10 p.m. on the grounds of Northwood Church, 46th and Central Avenue. The church is opening its space to the community for this event.
"Global Fest is really about bringing together the community to celebrate different cultures. It's open to all- free admission is really important to us because we want everyone to feel welcome," said Anne Luther-Sander, co-chair of the event. Global Fest features live global music, performances, artisans, and kids' activities, along with international food trucks and adult beverages. All proceeds will benefit the Center For Inquiry 70, an Indianapolis Public School magnet.
The event connects the local community and its citizens. "My family and I have always loved the fall festival season in Indy. With my daughter starting kindergarten at CFI 70 this past year, I really saw the need for fundraising - over 45 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. As an International Baccalaureate school, we are really focused on creating global citizens. What better way to explore other cultures than with food and fun for the entire community, not just our school?" Ms. Luther-Sander noted.
"Our principal, Chris Collier, immediately supported the idea and midtowner Laura Greene stepped up to help chair the event with me. It's been really exciting how the whole community is coming together to make this event happen. This is our first year, but we have an incredible line up already, representing dozens of different countries. In years to come, we hope to authentically represent even more cultures," she emphasized. "It's been so inspiring to see so many Indianapolis families and businesses rally around this event, supporting public education."
"We are more than just citizens of our neighborhoods, Indianapolis, Indiana and the U.S. We are citizens of the world. Global Fest celebrates just that," said Chris Collier, principal of the CFI 70. The presenting sponsors are Monon Construction Group and Luther Consulting.
"During the day, we will have everything from Chinese Shadow Puppets and the Iibada Dance Company to Hernly Family Karate and City Yoga," said Ms. Luther-Sander. Brave Youth Society, led by Denise Warnsby, will be debuting a new piece One World, One Dream specially created for the fest. At 5 p.m., the bands will take the stage starting with Grupo Bembe, which performs a fusion of Latino music-Salsa, Plena, Merengue. . . followed by Pork & Beans Brass Band representing the USA with New-Orleans-style funk. Sweet Poison Victim, an Afro-pop band and Indy favorite, will close the night with music that blends the sounds of Ghana, Nigeria, Congo, the Caribbean, Columbia, Mexico, Brazil and Western pop.
Global Fest is a family-friendly event. "We really want families to learn about games and crafts from around the world. We're going to have Australian Aboriginal dot painting, Italian bocce ball, henna painting, Swiss potato sack races, and all sorts of things. I have a three-year-old, so I know parents of little ones will especially appreciate having a fenced-in play area, secure bike/stroller parking and an air-conditioned room for nursing moms. Every child can get a Passport to Prizes and get stamps to win really fun treats and prizes. Chris and AnnDee Tatlock, CFI 70 parents, and owners of Under The Sun Discount Market that recently opened at 38th and Illinois are sponsoring Global Kids area and it's going to be a blast," she mentioned.
A diverse cuisine is on the menu. "We are excited to be hosting international food trucks so people can explore foods from different cultures-Indian, Jamaican, Venezuelan, Italian, Asian and more. Mark LaFay, who owns Old Major Market, has really been supportive and will be representing the USA with his amazing BBQ. Mark initially started his business by using the kitchen at Northwood Christian Church, so it's pretty great how he's coming back full circle. And being a true fall festival, there will, of course, be a special sectioned-off area with adult beverages available," Ms. Luther-Sander added.
"Art is such a wonderful expression of culture and we are expecting up to 20 globally-inspired artisans to display their work. William Denton Ray, the in-house designer for Sun King and CFI 70 father, created the Global Festival logo and his work often draw inspiration from Egyptian, African and Indian cultures," she mentioned.
"Our website, www.globalfestindy.org has all the details, including times for the Global Stage line-up and Global Kids activities. Right now you can even buy drinks and Global Kids tickets for a discounted price online in advance. We also have a Global Fest Indy Facebook page (www.facebook.com/events/176014449768643) and are on Instagram @globalfestindy," Ms. Luther-Sander said.
"Global Fest celebrates both what we have in common and our differences," said Chris Collier, principal of Center for Inquiry 70. That awareness and exposure spur us to think about how we can contribute to a global society."
