4th Broad Ripple Music Festival Oct 15/16 - By Mario Morone
by Mario Morone
posted: Oct. 01, 2010

The fourth annual Broad Ripple Music Festival begins Friday, October 15, 2010, with a showcase event at the Vogue Theatre, featuring Indianapolis-based Margot and the Nuclear So & So's and Jookabox. The event is composed of over 150 local, regional and national artists on 15 stages ranging from historic Broad Ripple musical venues such as The Vogue to north side dance clubs, neighborhood bars and family locations.
On Saturday, October 16, 2010, there will be 15 musical showcases throughout the local area that include The Right Now, Mystikos Quintet and Kyle Long at the Jazz Kitchen. There is also an all-ages/family-friendly showcase at the Indianapolis Art Center that will includes panel discussions, workshops and is accompanied by the chic craft fair creations of Handmade Promenade. Wristbands are available at an early bird admission price of $7 apiece. Event sponsors include Small Box Web Design, Nuvo, Musical Family Tree, Luna Music, Kolman Dental, P.C. and Bloomington radio station 92.3 WTTS. A list of other musical showcase information is available at www.broadripplemusicfest.com
The 2009 BRMF featured approximately 125 bands that played at 16 local venues raising $2,000 for their non-profit partner, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, who will also receive proceeds from this year's event. WRTV, FOX 59 News, WTTS, NUVO and Metromix were among local media entities covering the event last year.
Daniel Fahrner works as a (marketing) consultant in Internet marketing for Broad Ripple-based Small Box Web Design during the day. He is an also accomplished musician, having gotten his feet wet locally and nationally with psych-pop band Everthus the Deadbeats. His marketing savvy after hours has made him a presence on the local music scene as he began organizing BRMF last year.
"I became the festival coordinator in 2009 when the organizers got a little too busy with their local business, Small Box Web. They didn't want to see the event die. By teaming up with local folks, we held up the ideals that made the festival successful," Fahrner explained. "I used to play drums in a local band, Everthus the Deadbeats. We were based in Indianapolis, but toured nationally and released a CD on the local Standard Recording Company label in 2008," he added.
Before he joined Small Box Web, Fahrner worked at the Vogue for three years as an Assistant Concert Production Manager. He manages two local artists (Jookabox and Elsinore) in addition to owning a touring agency, Transpanther Group, whose work can be followed at www.twitter.com/transpanther. His other melodic venture, musicalfamilytree.com, is "an on-line music archive that is primarily Indiana music from the 1970s to the present day. There are many current and active artists on the site," he noted. They include Marmoset, Sardina, The Pieces, Arson Garden, Mysteries of Life and Gentleman Caller.
The Broad Ripple Music Festival provides patrons an opportunity not only to hear a musical diversity of local, regional and national artists, but also to help support Keep Indianapolis Beautiful in making the Circle City a great place to visit and live.
