On May 19 and 20, 2007, the 37th Annual Broad Ripple Art Fair took place, presented by the Indianapolis Art Center. There were 225 artists present that featured everything from handmade jewelry and purses to iron garden sculptures to painted canvases. Indianapolis cultural organizations were also present, as were a variety of music acts including folk, rock, jazz and more.
The Broad Ripple Art Fair is the largest fundraising event for the Art Center and attracts more than 25,000 visitors every year. It was held on the grounds of the Art Center, the 12-acre ARTSPARK and North Side Optimist Opti-Park.
Both days featured sunshine and temperatures in the mid 80s', which made for a great outdoor event where sunscreen was necessary. Village citizens and visitors alike strolled among the Art Fair grounds, packed the "food court" and lengthened the beer lines.
Inside the Art Center, lessons in pottery wheel spinning and glass blowing were offered to visitors. Art Center students and volunteers made these efforts possible. Face painting and paper-making lessons were also popular events for the younger crowd.
The Gazette took so many photos and conducted so many interviews that the coverage will be broken down into at least two issues-beginning with an overview in this issue, and artist features and music in the next.
